The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is seeking an Editorial Assistant to help execute the Center’s publication process. CNAS is a leading foreign policy and national security think tank that produces approximately 50 major analytic reports each year.


The Editorial Assistant, reporting to the Director of Publications, will play a key role in helping to coordinate the Center’s publications and will work closely with the Communications and Development teams. He/she must be able to work independently and as part of a team. This an overview of primary responsibilities. Other tasks may be required, and responsibilities may vary to fulfill the Center’s needs. This position is for an initial 9-month term with possibility for extension.



  • Edit and copyedit products as assigned, including press releases, development proposals, fundraising material, and policy reports
  • Provide support to the Director of Publications, including processing invoices and contracts and updating publication archive
  • Coordinate with external copyeditors
  • Develop an understanding of the publication process to facilitate submissions
  • Work with researchers to prepare their manuscripts for publication
  • Process copyright permissions
  • Review credits/sources for visuals



  • Background in print and/or online publications, including prior editorial experience
  • Strong copy editing, proofreading, and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects at once
  • Interested in contributing to cutting-edge research on U.S. national security policy
  • Legal right to work in the United States
